Health and social care workers (Online course)

The vocational course for health and social care workers is intended for Efling members who work in care services and provide assistance, care and support to people who are ill, disabled or elderly, either in their homes or in care institutions. The aim of the course is to develop participants’ professional skills and support them in their day-to-day work in health and social care. The course offered by MSS is based on the same accredited curriculum as the corresponding course offered by Mímir Continuing Education.


Course period: 9 September–16 December 2026

Class times: Mondays and Wednesdays from 17:00 to 20:00, with an additional on-site session one Saturday each month

Duration: 210 hours in total

Course format: Classes are taught via Teams, with one in-person session per month on a Saturday at MSS, Krossmói 4, Reykjanesbær.


The course focuses on practical knowledge and skills that participants can apply in their work. Topics include:


the role and activities of health and social care services,

service users’ circumstances and needs,

care and meaningful activities,

communication and intercultural competence,

infection prevention,

wellbeing, empowerment and rights,

initiative and quality awareness,

solution-focused approaches and working under pressure.


The course is taught in Icelandic, with weekly support sessions available in English and Spanish. Recordings of lessons can also be accessed afterwards, provided that participants submit a reflection and an assignment relating to the lesson content.


Assessment is based on attendance, submitted assignments, assessments and active participation. There are no final examinations. Emphasis is placed on assignments, practical exercises, group work, discussions and debates.


For Efling members working in the sector, the course is fully funded by Efling’s vocational education funds.
