This programme is intended for people who work in services supporting people with disabilities and have not completed formal upper secondary education. It is also suitable for people working with older people, people who are ill, or children and young people facing difficult circumstances.

The programme aims to increase participants’ understanding of the circumstances and needs of people with disabilities and strengthen their professional skills. Topics include:

• welfare services and approaches to disability,
• different disabilities and support needs,
• human rights and ethics,
• health, mental health conditions and medication,
• communication and cooperation,
• trauma and its effects,
• professional and person-centred support.

The programme consists of 324 hours and may be recognised for up to 16 upper secondary school credits. Classes are held on Teams on Mondays and Wednesdays from 17:00 to 20:30, with one Saturday session each month at MSS, Krossmói 4a in Reykjanesbær.

Assessment is based on assignments, attendance and active participation. There are no final examinations. Participants can watch recordings of classes later but must then submit a reflection and assignments based on the class content.

The programme is taught in Icelandic.

Efling covers the full programme fee for members who work in the sector, meet the admission requirements and have full entitlement in their vocational education fund. Registration is not confirmed until eligibility for funding has been reviewed.
