Do you know your rights at work?

This course provides practical information about the main rights of employees working for the state or municipalities. It is intended for employees who are employed directly by the state or a municipality, including people working in preschools, primary schools, nursing homes, social services, home care, care services, cleaning and canteens. Whether a position belongs to the public sector depends on the employer and the applicable collective agreement.

Specialists from Efling’s Labour Rights Division will explain key provisions of public-sector collective agreements and how they apply in everyday working life.

Topics include:

• working hours, rest periods, and meal and coffee breaks,
• overtime, shift premiums and other aspects of shift work,
• sick leave, leave due to a child’s illness and workplace accidents,
• holiday entitlement and other rights to time off,
• notice periods and changes to employment terms,
• employment contracts, payslips and the importance of keeping records relating to the employment relationship.

Participants will also learn where to seek assistance if they suspect that their employment terms do not comply with a collective agreement or the law. The course will conclude with a brief overview of members’ main rights through Efling’s sickness and holiday funds and other services provided by the union.

The course will be held in Icelandic with live English text interpretation displayed on screen.

The course is free of charge for Efling members.
