Health and social care workers (Online course)

The vocational course in social and healthcare services is intended for people who work or would like to work in care and support roles and have not completed formal upper secondary education. The course aims to develop participants’ professional skills and support them in their day-to-day work.


The course at Miðstöð símenntunar á Suðurnesjum (MSS) follows a curriculum developed by the Education and Training Service Centre (Fræðslumiðstöð atvinnulífsins) and may be recognised for up to 10 credits at upper secondary level.


Course dates: 11 January – 20 May 2027

Class times: Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00–8:00 pm, plus one Saturday of in-person classes per month

Duration: 210 hours in total

Format: Online classes via Teams and in-person sessions at MSS, Krossmói 4a, 3rd floor, Reykjanesbær


The course focuses on practical knowledge that can be applied at work. Topics include:


  • how social and healthcare services operate,
  • service users’ circumstances and needs,
  • care, meaningful activities and occupational therapy,
  • intercultural skills,
  • infection prevention and control,
  • wellbeing, empowerment and rights,
  • initiative and quality awareness,
  • problem-solving and working under pressure.

The course is taught in Icelandic, with weekly support sessions in English and Spanish. Participants can also listen to recordings of classes afterwards, but must then submit a reflection and an assignment on the class content.


Assessment is based on attendance, assignments, quizzes and active participation. There are no final exams. Learning activities include practical exercises, group work and discussions.


Efling covers the course fee for members employed by public-sector employers.
