Vocational Course for Health and Social Care Support Staff

Teaching period: September 15 to December 17, 2026

Teaching days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and one Friday a month

Length: 191 teaching hours

Vocational Course for Health and Social Care Support Staff is intended for Efling members who work in care services and provide assistance, care and support to people who are ill, disabled or elderly, either in their own homes or in residential care facilities. The aim of the course is to strengthen participants' professional skills and support them in their daily work in health and social care.

The course focuses on practical knowledge that can be applied directly in the workplace. Topics include assisting with activities of daily living, communication, workplace culture and personal empowerment. In addition, special emphasis is placed on developing Icelandic listening and reading skills in the parts of the course that focus on communication in residential care settings.

From autumn 2026 onwards, the programme will be taught as one comprehensive course. Previously, it was divided into Care I and Care II, but these have now been combined into a single programme.

The course is intended for individuals who:

  • work in health and social care,
  • are at least 20 years of age,
  • have not completed upper secondary education.

The course is taught in Icelandic. Participants are recommended to have Icelandic language skills at CEFR level A2 to B1 or higher to ensure the best possible learning experience. Those who are unsure of their Icelandic proficiency are encouraged to contact Mímir for guidance on whether a placement assessment would be appropriate before applying.

Assessment is based on coursework, assignment submissions, class participation and attendance. Participants must attend at least 80% of the course to complete it successfully and receive a certificate of completion.

The course is offered in cooperation between Efling and Mímir Lifelong Learning and follows a curriculum accredited by the Centre for Education and School Services. For Efling members working in the relevant field, the course fee is fully covered by Efling's Vocational Training Fund.
